Lake Hallett 10 Years Ago

The following clips are from SPPA Connections.  Trudi Olmanson and I rowed around the lake on June 11, 2003. She explained many details of Lake Hallett.

Trudi explains the testing procedure for water clarity on the lake.

The water clarity test results from June 11, 2003.

Trudi explains some of the history of Lake Hallett.

It’s Time for a Laugh

Before I had gained recognition through contests and awards there was a lot of work that went into each and every one of the programs I produced.  “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”, comes to mind.

In my program Keep on Growing, my intro into the following clips gives you some clues.

Either at the beginning or end of a program I summarized what the viewer would be seeing or the outcome of what I was trying to get across to my audience.  Sometimes that took a bit of practice.

And finally, the element of patience comes out loud and clear, especially when dealing with children and wildlife, two of my favorite subjects.

I think the main element of the whole process for me was to have fun!

And that I did!

First Fishing News Story

Fishing either on ice or water is particularly popular in Minnesota.  The clips you are about to see are from I think 1988.  I did not write down the date.  However, I do recall the story and the people involved.

Get a load of the nifty graphics.  My intro summarizes the news feature.

This next clip is some of the people included.  Do you recognize any of these individuals?

This walleye fishing contest was sponsored by Randy Voss & Jeff Smith and the Caribou Gun Club.  As I best recall, the club had been sponsoring this event in the summertime for a few years.  Keep in mind that this was 25 years ago.  The guys explain it all.

The two children at the end of this clip are my son, Willie and daughter Katie heading toward the Mill Pond.  They loved going to that park to play and fish.

It seems to me that fishing satisfies so many humanly needs.  It was an excellent way of teaching the kids patience.  It was very relaxing and sometimes made some mighty fine suppers!

My Connection with John Hartford

The date:  July 22, 1995, eighteen years ago yesterday I met the late John Hartford.

It was suggested by friends that I might want to see about taping music at the New York Mills Continental Divide Music & Film Festival.  The opportunity to capture John Hartford couldn’t be turned down.  My daughter, who was nine at the time and her friend, accompanied me on an approximate three to four hour drive.

We arrived in the early afternoon.  While strolling the festival grounds and viewing various artisans’ wares I looked up and there was John Hartford!  I said, “John Hartford?”  He said, “Yes.”  I quickly introduced myself and asked his permission to tape his performance.  I remember this.  I was wearing sunglasses and he asked me to remove my glasses.  Not too many people make that kind of request but never-the-less I obliged.  I went onto explain that I wanted to tape his performance for our town’s local cable TV.  I also mentioned that St. Peter has a music festival as well and we would be thrilled to have him perform at our festival.  I introduced him to my friends who were on the Rock Bend Folk Festival Committee and the rest is history.

This clip was his first song of an hour and a half performance from the New York Mills Continental Divide Music & Film Festival on July 22, 1995.

This next clip was from his performance at the Rock Bend Folk Festival, September 9, 1995 and his Grammy Award winning song, Gentle on My Mind.

Even if my part was small in Hartford’s performance at Minnesota Square Park in St. Peter, Minnesota, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to capture the moments and bring them back for your viewing pleasure!

Have a wonderful day!

Connections with John Mayer and the Govenaires

I had gotten permission from John to go ahead and tape anything I wanted to on the 4th of July and had about a day to cogitate over a plan.  I decided to take my bike for the excursion.  I figured the bike would provide a faster means of transportation.

I swiftly assembled the articles I would need for this venture and set out with camera slung around neck taking off on my trusty Canondale.  As I got closer to the parade route so were cars that were trying to find a parking place.  I quickly got on the parade route and proceeded to the beginning of the parade.

I found out where the Govenaires were in the line-up and road over to where the group assembled for the parade.  John was still getting ready and as I introduced myself I also mentioned that we were connected through our Mothers and their work in St. Peter’s Catholic Church Senior Choir.  He has his memories of the choir as well but I think that’s a different story.

After chit chatting for a bit I got on my bike and headed toward Gorman Park where I waited for the group.  The people along Washington Avenue were anxiously awaiting the parade as well.

.

As they came by they played, “Grand Old Flag”.  I got what shots I could and hopped back on the bike and road ahead toward the end of the parade route where I was able to park my bike at a friend’s home.  I quickly spied my niece and their family and got some snaps of their family before the Govies appeared.

Again, they played, “Grand Old Flag”.  So, this clip you are about to see is a combination of the same song in two different locations.

Afterward, I headed to the park and taped their performance.  And while I would love to show you that whole performance time and limitations with my equipment will not dictate that video at this time but I would like to recap another clip that gave me the inspiration to present this story in the first place.

When I was finished I headed back home and stopped at a couple friends on my way.  As I was peddling, my Mom’s jingle for the Grain Belt Commercial popped into my head.  And that is my transition into the next feature story for the month of August.

Mom and I collaborated on the Grainbelt commercial contest back in 2005.  We didn’t win but the Govenaires are in this for a brief moment.

I’m taking the weekend off from writing but I’ll be back on board next week.  Till then, as Joseph Campbell said, “Follow your bliss, and the universe will open doors for you where there were only walls.”

Have a Great Weekend!

FISHING TRADITIONS

Son, Willie, age 14
30# Flathead Catfish
Caught on the
Minnesota River

Most Minnesotans enjoy a sport very near and dear to their hearts, fishing.  Our family is no exception.

The following clip that you’re about to see was taken from “40 Years of Memories”, an anniversary video I did for the folks in 1995.  This particular blip is of the guys while fishing in Canada.

I have an even better clip from that same video in 8mm.  I used the music from the Hula-Poppers, “Walleye”.  It’s a cute song set to the melody of “Rawhide”.  Lyrics by Richard A Lewis & Larry Hayes.  If I can get ahold of the guys for permission I will definitely play it as the clip is rather entertaining.  I still have that 45rpm record.  If anyone has any information on these two guys I would enjoy contacting them.  The record was cut at Shadow Records in 1986, 1517 West Lake Street, Minneapolis, MN  55408.

The weather continues to stay hot and muggy and even our pets just want to lay around.  Minion, my son’s cat wasn’t even interested in the catnip that I practically stuck under his nose.  Oh well.  Notice the lovely bouquet that was freshly picked this morning.  My poppies are blooming.  I planted this variety from seed.

This post is short as I am planning on the Govenaires post tomorrow and have a bit of editing left on that clip.

Not Yet

It’s going to be a hot one today.  I just got done watering flowers and my pumpkin patch.  The weather will be affecting my progress on editing today.  My computer just doesn’t run as smoothly even with my air on.  Additionally, while I am developing this project I still need to continue other commitments in my life.  Today is no exception.  I work in Northfield part time as their Audio Visual Technician taping and streaming their City Council Meetings and workshops.  So while I do not have as much time to devote to the Govenaires today…guess what?  I found some more archived material that I think you will find entertaining and coincides with the projects general goals.

A brief intro…

I found two of my first clips I edited while attending the University of Minnesota Technical College in Waseca.  While taking a TV & Radio class I learned the concept of linear editing.  I was also in the Radio Club, KUMW.  As a club presentation for the school we came up with this idea.  The first clip is “Shut upa Your Face”.  The good sports in this clip are some of the teachers and leaders of the school.

If anyone recognizes any of the people in the clip please share this clip with them.  I have lost touch with many that I went to school with but this fun memory was easy to transfer to you as well as reminisce about.

I’m Alright…
The following lip sync is my fellow classmates.  If anyone recognizes any of my fellow college classmates please share this post with them.  Can you tell which one is me?

The graphic title stated:  Directed by Kris Diamond, Edited by Pat Stoffel (that’s me), and Assisted by RAM Radio – KUMW.  Fall, 1981.

As you can see I have a wide
varieties of clips to choose from.

While I enjoy bringing you these very time capsulated memories I’m finding that funding will be crucial in the projects success.  If you have enjoyed some of these clips already presented to you, perhaps you would like to contribute to my efforts!

Just a Little Detour--Sunday, July 14, 2013

I’m still editing the Govenaires at the Fourth of July Celebration but had to make a detour.  I don’t want my readers to get bored or loose interest.  I have an excellent excuse which leads into my story today.  On the 4th of July while I waited for the drum corp  I locked up my bike and meandered Minnesota Square Park.  I happened to see and greet a good friend, Paul Schwichenberg.  I told him what I was doing with the blog/vlog (at that point I was still in development stages).  How people are really interested in preserving their memories.  I then went on to tell him about while copying some of my clips from the past I started uploading them to Facebook and youtube and received positive response from some of my oldies.  And at that point made the decision to start the new blog/vlog.

From my short spiel , we soon talked about our connection via public access.  For whatever reason I had Paul’s Antarctica tape from 1987 and a vacation tape from 1995.  He asked if I do a transfer for him which of course I did .  As I was transferring his VHS to DVD I edited a clip from the Antarctica tape, with permission of Paul.

Antarctica.  This is amazing.  The graphics were on a 8x10 college ruled paper and what looked like magic maker print.  Lyle C. Steichen’s spent October, 1987 to October 1988 in Antarctic.  Paul was in a lot of the footage as well as explaining to Lyle about what they were seeing.  This is just a brief glimpse from a two hour tape of Antactica.

This clip is brought to you by a generous sponsorship by Paul Schwichenberg!

Well that about wraps it up for this post.  I WILL have the story on the Govenaires before the week is out.
This project does give me some thoughts about what direction I want to go and I think that each month I will be featuring a significant story that may take two or three posts to finish.  I came up with that idea while snapping these lovely shots in my back yard.  I’ll give you more information after the Govies on the 4th

Prelude to "The Govenaires on July 4, 2013"

John Mayer July 4, 2013

Some may say, “How ironic” when I tell this story of how my thoughts and the evolution of the idea for the blog/vlog unfolded and developed and is the beginning of my upcoming story.

As I was developing my first post I sat from my studio, window open with a soft, warm breeze gently touching my skin, looking out. The lovely shades of green all around offset by an almost Mediterranean blue sky with only a few dappled puffs of cottony clouds.

I was outlining multiple ideas from my desk when I heard the starting of the Govenaires begin another practice.  I live within blocks of the Scholarship Foundation.  This was on July 2nd.  By this point, I had multiple brainstorming ideas, post-it notes posted in multiple rooms of the house, drafts written and tucked in a folder.  No doubt I had lots of ideas but needed to organize them.

I could hear the group assembling within the various sections.  The drumming and their beats I always hear first.  The snares with the rata-tat-tat and the symbols crash while still I hear the boom of the kettle drums.

Then I hear the brass.  The high and low range sounds.

And while I couldn’t make out the vocals, only a muffle coming from the practice range, I sure could hear the hoops and howling from multiple members.

It wasn’t windy that day but it sure was louder than usual when it occurred to me they were practicing for the Fourth of July celebration and by the sounds of it, they were probably executing a sort of dress rehearsal.

With various starts and stops within the theme of their program I continued on with sorting and more writing and in between transferring my various clips to an mpeg format, editing only the most concise moments of the clip.

Then the Govenaires started revving up for the tune, “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend”.  I stopped what I was doing and gave the Govenaires my full listening attention.  As the song played I found myself tapping along and even singing to myself the chorus lines.  I thought to myself, “Geez, they ARE good this year.”

I further thought how my Mom, Mary M. Stoffel and John’s Mom, Margaret were connected colleagues in St. Peter’s Catholic Church choir.  I remember Mom bringing me along when the choir would practice before mass.  I got to sit up in the choir loft and look down at the church all around and many of the choir members would dote over me as I was the only small child allowed up there.  I'm sure John has a few memories from the choir as well.

And then through-out the years I remember other connections I had with the Govies and the “Golfin with the Govies” community news I had done in the past.

I further thought...a story about the drum corp should be noted.  The song ended and I could hear the groups cheering with delight in recognition of a sound well done!  But back to work I went.

The next day I dropped my daughter Katie off at work around mid-morning and headed to the library with intentions of getting that first post for Rose-Now Connections published.  On my way back home for whatever reason I decided to swing by Patrick’s on Third and see about getting permission to tape some of the Govenaires on the Fourth of July.  I really didn’t have a plan but knew it might be something the community would enjoy hearing and seeing and also knew out of common courtesy I should ask if that would be ok to tape.  Stepping into the dimly lit bar, I was optimistic in seeing Mr. Mayer as he is after all the proprietor of the establishment.  He wasn’t there but I left a message requesting he call me back and left it at that.  I figured if he calls or doesn’t call would mean either I tape or don’t tape the group on the 4th.

It wasn’t long after I returned home and then to the library that I did indeed get a call back from him.  What started out as what I thought would be a brief yes or no permission turned into a short but healthy discussion and in the end John told me to go ahead and tape whatever I wanted.

And so, while my followers are patiently waiting for my story, “The Govenaires on the Fourth of July, 2013”; it is with great pleasure I give you a little sneak peek of John Mayer and the Govenaires, three time world Campion’s and inductee into the Hall of Fame Drum and Bugle Corp.

Don't forget, become a Rose-Now Connections follower!  You'll gain valuable knowledge and gain a smile for the day.

The Meaning Behind the Title

Through a series of events that have recently occurred in my life I am bringing back many old and new videos that family, friends, community and the world have enjoyed from the past as well as creating new videos that inform, educate and always try to entertain my audiences!

A young Mother,
eager videographer
Age 31

Older Mother
Still a Videographer

Pre-Rosenow

I will be as brief as needed in order for the reader to gain better understanding of my very dear and passionate art, moving pictures (film/video) spanning over the course of close to forty years.  I think it's important for you to know a little bit about me and my background before I start the show.

I began using video as a way to communicate with others.  As best I remember, in 1981, while attending the University of Minnesota Technical College, Agricultural Extension in Waseca, I was enrolled in a TV & Radio class.  From that point on I knew I was hooked.  Video had been around since the 60's but I was new to it.  We used 3/4" video tape with a connected video camera and used linear editing equipment.  Unfortunately, the footage I have from this time in my life is on 3/4" inch tape and I have no 3/4" player.  So I will forgo that pleasure to you at the moment but may be able to bring some clips to you in the future.

But truly, my interest in moving pictures started before video.  I was a young teenager when I started using both photographic and 8mm film.  My first family smash hit had to be "The Fashion Show".  With most movies you need characters.  As mentioned in my profile, I am the second oldest of nine children, oldest sister.  Using my younger siblings as characters, they were eager to star in my movie.  Finding a bag of old clothes they used them as costumes for our collaborated adventure.  The goal was to have fun, laugh and be funny. (I was probably 13 or 14?)  I think we achieved our goal!  The videos have definitely faded since I first transferred the 8mm to video but the film is still in amazingly good condition.

My films for the most part consisted of capturing various family events.  Having the experience of living in the country gave me some wonderfully colorful backgrounds to film against.  I was raised on a farm seven miles outside St. Peter, in between Ottawa and Cleveland.  Many events that were filmed were events such as vacations (mostly up north), relatives and our get togethers, and events on the farm like hay bailing or the time my brothers found a boat that was washed up alongside the river bank on Father's farming land in the spring after flooding had occurred.  I don't remember how they got it back to the farm but as you will see a long rope of twine string was attached to the boat where sister, Teresa pulled the little vessel upstream for brothers Andy and Bob.  In the background you can see my late brother Chuck and sister Marguerite fishing in the creek.  I believe the fish Marguerite is holding up is that of a small bullhead.  It was not uncommon for us kids to quite often catch chubs, crayfish or small bullheads from Cherry Creek on the farm's property.

Pat Rosenow Productions

Upon completion of school I had a degree, two small children and no work.  Many employers told me they were looking for someone with more experience.  For me public access was a means to gain experience in the field.  But really I gained so much more than experience from public access.  The whole philosophy of programs being produced by and for your own community was quite appealing to me.  From 1986 to 1992 I volunteered at St. Peter's Public Access (SPPA) and worked at Le Sueur's public access (CATV-6) as their Production Coordinator.  I also chaired the SPPA Advisory Board during this time.  I was definitely an advocate for public access TV.

My first program produced for SPPA was "Duck Hunting 1986. I got quite a chuckle out of viewing that old clip.  I was maybe 31 years old.  I later used clips from "Duck Hunting" for another promotional video I called "Keep On Growing".  That program became a finalist for a national award in the promotion category.

Here's a short clip from
"Keep On Growing", my take on Duck Hunting...

I received other recognitions in quality programming for videos I produced while utilizing SPPA's equipment and gaining more experience in the field.  In 1990, I won first place in the kids category for my video clip entitled, "Bad Boys".  This was a video contest sponsored by a syndicated program called Video Challenge.

Bad Boys evolved after seeing the music video on MTV.  I think it was the Cats characters set to their song.  This was a very different take on the lyrics that I had envisioned.  I had multiple friends and family with children and felt that incorporating children into this creation was an important concept to my vision of the video.  Utilizing photographic snapshots, 8mm film transfers and video I choreographed the dance and lip sync at various locations within and around St. Peter.  The clip is only a portion of the whole song but I think you will get a pretty good idea of how it went.

I had submitted the clip to Video Challenge in the early spring.  Representatives called me regarding the song I used.  I still have the 45 record.  It was made in 1985 by the Miami Sound Machine, produced by Emilio Estefan, Jr.  I paid $2.49 for the recording.

I thought to myself if they're getting permission I'll be my clip will be part of their show.  They did not give me any information as to whether I won or not.

Here's the winning clip....

I remember when I found out the news.  It was a late summer afternoon when the phone rang.  It was my neighbor, the late Gerald Health.  He stated I won the contest.  He just watched it on TV.  That was a most wonderful surprise and I still have the set of encyclopedias.

The following year, 1991 I won first place in the promo category from the Minnesota Community Television Awards for my video, "Get Smart".  Here again, this video involved children.  I wanted to promote the public access in a positive and entertaining manner.  The idea behind it was if you watch channel 7 you'll get smart.

When he announced I was the winner I felt like "The Price is Right" when the contestants come and join Bob Barker center stage.  I was competing with others from all over Minnesota.

From 1992 to 2005 (almost 14 years) I worked for the City of St. Peter as their Public Access Coordinator.  As Coordinator, my charge was to manage all aspects of the public access cable TV station.  Promoting the station in various was was a given.

The late Bob Wettergren (Mr. St. Peter) had a weekly program called Know Your Community featuring people from around the area whom he interviewed about a business or event that was happening at the time.  I have fond memories of his program and his quotes he used from time to time like..."as the great Dizzy Dean said, if ya done it, it ain't bragging" or at the end of every program he's say, "See ya next week, God willing."

A very successful event I had no problem promoting was SPOOK CORNER.  Over multiple years the station produced this LIVE event.  I have multiple clips of multiple years of this particular event with multiple community people.  I will be featuring a story in October on this original and entertaining venture.

The list can go on and on with a wide range of programs and I hope to bring you many different shows of interest like the Winter Fest Children's Fiddle Contest or John Hartford performing at the Rock Bend Folk Festival in St. Peter.

From 2003 to 2005 I produced a show called SPPA Connections.  It was a branch off from the Know Your Community showcasing individuals or groups/organizations that were involved with SPPA.

I think these clips gives you a flavor for some of the subject matter.

Really, Rose-Now Connections is all about the connections I have or had with the community, friends, family and even parts of the world.

And now into the future of Rose-Now Connections my approach is the KISS method...keep it simple stupid.  In addition to sharing past programs that were produced while at the station I will bring you clips from various ventures since I started up my own business,
Pat Rosenow Productions.

At the end of each blog/vlog post I will you you a sneak peek into the next post.  For example, some of you may have seen me on the Fourth of July taping the Govenairs while at the parade or at the park.  My next post is indeed my Fourth of July and the connections during that memorable day.

I got to where the Govenaires were lining up for the parade.

Here they were practicing as they waited for the parade to begin.
