FALL IN MINNESOTA

During the days ahead, in this month of October, I'd like to pay tribute to a community project very near and dear to my heart, Spook Corner.

Spook Corner began in 1993 as an idea to promote public access TV and engage the community with this wonderful free resource.

On October 31, 1993 Spook Corner was born.  With the help of multiple volunteers I coordinated efforts that connected many people here in St. Peter.  The station hosted a live event where trick or treaters came through the haunted studio and received treats as well as being interviewed live.  In addition, we asked Halloween trivia questions where viewers could call in and win prizes that were donated from area businesses and still others donated their time either by being in front of the cameras as characters or in back of the camera as TV crew members.  So many aspects of this project proved to be so successful that it became a tradition that expanded and encompassed more and more community members of St. Peter.

After the tornado in 1998 Spook Corner was wasn't revived until 2003.  It was at that time the ball got set in motion to reserect this holiday event with a slightly different slant.  While the production didn't go live we created an interactive Talent Show with community residents participating in front of and in back of the camera.

And so, in these days ahead during this fall month I hope to bring you all some very fun clips from this festive event.

In the meantime, I selected a clip from 1993.  It's called, "The Great Scarecrow Patch".  It was shot at Emma Krumbee's in Belle Plaine, Minnesota.  That event has grown considerable since it first started.  Please click on the link below for your viewing pleasure...

A Most Delightful Remembrance

Bruce Davis & Sedra Bistodeau LIVE in the studio of St. Peter Public Access, cable channel 7.
February 11, 2005

I think this was the first year that St. Peter held the Winterfest and as part of the festivities a Youth Fiddle Contest was hosted in the Community Center's Governors Room.  Adrian Lo organized the event where children came from all over the state.
Two floors down, the St. Peter Public Access (SPPA) was conducting a live show.  Bruce Davis, from KRBI graciously contributed his services by acting as announcer and host for our program.  It was almost four hours of live programming that day.

I remember this little 10 year old girl who came down to the studio and let Bruce interview her.  She was absolutely delightful.

Click this link below to see this interview of Sedra.

This sure was a fun clip to share with all of you.

So what is Sedra doing now.  Just plug in her name, Sedra Bistodeau and you will see the many wonderful pieces of music she continues to play and perform for audiences all over.

Here's one from 2009 I thought was exceptional!

Sedra's family should also have mention.  There were multiple video clips in which the whole family have performed together.
Take a look at this one for example....

Some Fond Memories at Cinema 5 in St. Peter, MN

It does seem a shame that St. Peter no longer has a theater in our town but I think many of us have some sort of memory or favorite movie that they went to see at St. Peter's Cinema 5.

I'm no different than most in that my fun and happy memory of this theater surrounded a birthday/movie premier of Sex and the City.  To celebrate a friend's birthday we honored her with the event taking place at Mike Toohey's B&B a block from the theater.

At the same time the premier of "Sex & the City was taking place.  After a couple of Cosmopolitans we headed on foot to the theater.

This video recaps the event.

My Connection with Jerry Jeff Walker

The story must be told of my connection with Mr. Jerry Jeff Walker.

About two weeks ago I learned that Jerry Jeff Walker was performing at the Minnesota Zoo however, I didn't have the date for the event.

I did a quick google of the event and found the date of the event as well as Mr. Walker's website link.

I've been a long time fan.  Even though I was a mere whipper snapper when these recordings came out I'm still able to spin the vinyls with a few crackles on them.  But then those crackles lend to the character of the recording.
After a quick browse through JJ's website I found some interesting connections with this man.

Of course we all know his famous "Mr. Bojangles" song.  But I think Mr. Jimmy Ibbotson, explains it best.

Click the link below to view

I was totally enchanted when I came across his "Down in Belize".  Jimmy Ibbotson performs as well in this video.  Jerry Jeff Walker at the Zone Studio, Dripping Springs, Texas, August 2009.

I further thought....maybe I should try getting an interview since he will be in Minnesota.  His website provided an email link as well as a phone number.  I tried emailing but the link wouldn't work.  So I gave a call but only got a voice mail.  I left a message but I guess I got a little too long winded as I was cut off.  I left a second message this time with my phone number.  This was about a week or so before his arrival in Minnesota.

I couldn't stop thinking about what a great interview this might turn into with my connections, not only with the Mr. Bojangles song but my connections with Belize.

The day before Mr.Walker's gig at the Minnesota Zoo I called JJW's booking number and this time I got through.  I spoke with a woman by the name of Stacy who did not get my message but did directed me to email Jennifer Evans, Executive Assistant to Susan & Jerry Jeff Walker with my request for an interview.  Within an hour Ms Evans replied, "Hi Pat- JJ has a lot scheduled already in MN, as he is doing a quick "fly in/fly back out".  I will try to get this message to him and see if there is anytime available.  I so appreciate you thinking of him! (And that Ibby is a sweetie!)"

After Ms Evan's reply my first thought was well, it's out of my hands now.  Either he'll grant me the interview or not.  But wait, what did I really know about the Texas Troubadour?  If I did get the interview I had better do some research and prepare myself in the event that I did get that opportunity.  I remember back when interviewing John McEuen, I really didn't have that much time to prepare although, it always works out the way it should.

There is so much information on the web a person can and often does get lost.  Wikipedia alone gave me a wealth of information like Jerry Jeff Walker born Ronald Clyde Crosby on March 16, 1942. He is most famous for his recording of Mr. Bojangles.  His song has been recorded by many popular artists including Garth Brooks, Chet Atkins, Harry Belafonte, David Bromberg, The Byrds, JJ Cale, Jim Crose, Sammy Davis Jr., John Denver, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Whitney Houston, Billy Joel, Don McLean, Harry Nilsson, Frank Sinatra, Cat Stevens, Jim Stafford, Dolly Parton and more.

Then I got into some of his recordings found on youtube.

This is his recording of Mr. Bojangles from an appearance on The Dinah Shores Show in 1978

But I think his funnest recording that I viewed is his recording with David Bromberg:

My evening was spent totally "getting lost" in the wealth of information there is on this talented and inspirational man.

The next day I received an email from Ms. Evans that explained that JJ was just too swamped to grant that interview but even though I didn't get the interview (this time) or see the show at the zoo  (JJ posted this message on Facebook - Thanks, Minnesota, for coming out to the Zoo! In case you didn't catch all the band members' names, we've got this great group of guys: Billy Brad Fordham on bass, Steve Samuel on drums, and Chris Gage on guitar (and just about any other instrument we hand him).) it was fun viewing and reading about this legend!

This Labor Day Day was quietly spent gathering the pumpkins from my tiny pumpkin patch before the nasty pumpkin beetle got a hold of them.

Just one last little clip

The Final Clip of Choice Moments From the Rock Bend Folk Festival

As this is the final clip of Choice Moments From the Rock Bend Folk Festival, I have to say what a pleasure it’s been to share these various moments with you.

These few clips have only been the tip of the iceberg.  So many musicians have performed right here in St. Peter. I wouldn’t begin to count them all or name them all.

The past 22 years have been filled with lovely memories of not only the musicians but the fond memories of friends, family and community joining in such a good idea, a free music festival.  Kudos to the Rock Bend Folk Festival committee for bringing this event to our little community and creating a togetherness with peace and joy!
